A Sign of Grace

This weekend we will be doing something remarkable. But more on that in a moment...

Our passages are coming to us from a small book in the Hebrew Bible, one of two named for women. Taking place during the time of the Judges, the Book of Ruth tells the story of women who changed the course of an entire people. In fact, changed the course of the entire world.

How? You may ask.

Very simply, they chose to commit to one another. Decided to be a family. Though they initially did not share a religion, a people, or even a land of origin, they were the founders of the line of Jesse. Without them the Davidic line, and therefore the Messiah himself, would not exist.

As a wise sage once said, "it is our choices that define us." Not those that are made for us. Not the laws of the land or the customs of our people or the traditions of our religion. It is what we choose to do with the knowledge and resources we have at our disposal. Here. Now. From one moment to the next.

This weekend our congregation at Grace will be commiting ourselves to one another - that we want to continue in Christ's work and ministry at our church and in our community.

We will do this through the dedication of pledge cards that help our leaders plan for the future by knowing what time, talent, and treasure we feel we can give in the coming year. We will do this with a Reaffirmation of our Baptismal Covenant for the entire congregation made together, as one, during worship. And we will do this by dedicating a brand new Chancel Bible that never belonged to one of the legacy churches - this one is entirely ours. A bible for Grace's present and future, a tangible sign of grace big enough for all to see.

We cannot wait to see you there!

Blessings,

Rev. Janie
