For centuries, if not milenia, much of the Christian church has kept its believers focused on what will happen in the next life. For if you keep your eyes on heaven, how much harder is it to notice the atrocities and shades of perdition occurring in our midst here on earth.
However, this concentration on the afterlife was not Christ's or God's intended purpose. Though the evidence is vast, one need not look any further than the Lord's Prayer we recite every week - "your kingdom come, your will be done, in earth as it is in heaven."
The life of discipleship is about bringing heaven to earth - not the other way around. Living into the commands and lessons Jesus gave during his earthly life, which are in fact an extension of God's own mandates of how we are to live with our fellow humans.
Christ's main focus was always to make life better for the children of God (all of them) here and now.
No matter who they are. What they have done. How God made them.
Heaven's visage on earth.
Which is what we are called to, too.
Blessings,
Rev. Janie
